Dermabrasion
Dermabrasion
What It Is
Dermabrasion is a procedure that uses a rotating instrument to remove the outermost layers of skin. The abrading action removes fine surface irregularities and deeper scarring, promoting smoother skin texture. It is typically used to address acne scars, surgical scars, and fine lines, particularly around the mouth.
Good Candidates
Candidates are generally those with acne scars, surgical scars, or persistent fine lines who have not had satisfactory results with gentler treatments. People with fair skin often see clearer results, though a qualified provider can advise on suitability for other skin tones. Those with active skin infections, certain medications, or recent sun exposure should disclose these to their provider.
What to Expect
The area is cleaned and numbed with local anesthesia. The provider uses a motorized abrading device to systematically remove skin layers, creating a controlled wound that promotes new skin growth. The procedure typically takes 30 minutes to over an hour depending on the area treated.
Recovery and Aftercare
The treated area will appear red and raw immediately after, similar to a significant scrape. Oozing and crusting are normal and typically last 7 to 10 days. Strict sun protection and gentle wound care are essential during healing to prevent complications.
Results and Longevity
Smoother texture and softer scar appearance usually become visible as the area heals over several weeks. Final results emerge over 2 to 3 months as new skin matures. Results are generally long-lasting, though new scars or wrinkles may develop over time.
