Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)
What It Is
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is a non-laser treatment that uses broad-spectrum light to address skin concerns including sun spots, rosacea, uneven tone, and unwanted hair. The light energy is absorbed by target structures in the skin, such as melanin in pigmented lesions or hemoglobin in blood vessels, causing them to break down or fade. A single session typically takes 15 to 30 minutes depending on the area treated.
Good Candidates
IPL works best on individuals with lighter to medium skin tones and darker hair or pigmentation that contrasts with the surrounding skin. Those with sun damage, age spots, mild rosacea, or fine facial and body hair are common candidates. A qualified provider will assess your specific skin type and concerns to determine if IPL is appropriate for you.
What to Expect
You will be positioned comfortably, and the treatment area will be cleansed. A cooling gel is typically applied, and the provider uses a handheld device to deliver pulses of light across the skin. Most people report a sensation similar to a rubber band snap, though discomfort is usually minimal. Protective eyewear is worn throughout.
Recovery and Aftercare
There is no downtime, though the skin may appear slightly red or feel warm immediately after treatment. Sunscreen is essential for several days following the procedure. Most people resume normal activities right away.
Results and Longevity
Results develop gradually over weeks as pigmented spots fade and skin tone becomes more even. For hair reduction, multiple sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart are typically needed to address different growth cycles. Results are not permanent, and maintenance sessions may be recommended.
