Botox
What It Is
Botox is a brand-name neuromodulator, a prescription injectable that uses purified botulinum toxin to temporarily relax facial muscles. When injected into specific areas, it blocks nerve signals that cause muscle contractions, allowing overlying skin to smooth and dynamic wrinkles to fade. It is commonly used on the forehead, between the brows, around the eyes, and other areas where repetitive muscle movement creates lines.
Good Candidates
Botox works best for people with active wrinkles caused by facial expression, particularly those in their 30s to 60s. It is most effective on the upper face and areas where skin is still relatively elastic. A qualified provider can assess whether your concerns and skin type are good candidates for treatment.
What to Expect
Botox injections take 10 to 15 minutes. The provider marks target areas and injects small amounts of product using a fine needle. Sensations range from minimal to mild discomfort; no anesthesia is required, though some clinics offer topical numbing.
Recovery and Aftercare
There is no downtime. You may see mild redness or swelling at injection sites that typically fades within hours. Most providers advise avoiding strenuous exercise and staying upright for a few hours afterward to allow the product to settle.
Results and Longevity
Visible smoothing usually appears within three to seven days, with full results by two weeks. Results last approximately three to four months, after which muscle activity gradually returns and wrinkles reappear. Repeat treatments are needed to maintain the effect.
