Neck Lift
Neck Lift
What It Is
A neck lift is a surgical procedure that addresses loose or sagging skin and muscle laxity in the neck and jawline area. The surgeon typically makes incisions under the chin or behind the ears, then tightens the underlying platysma muscle and removes or repositions excess skin. The goal is to create a smoother, more defined neck contour and reduce the appearance of neck bands.
Good Candidates
Candidates typically have loose neck skin, visible neck bands, or a lack of definition between the jaw and neck. Good health and realistic expectations about results are important. A qualified surgeon will assess your skin elasticity, overall health, and specific concerns to determine if a neck lift is appropriate for you.
What to Expect
A neck lift is performed under general anesthesia or IV sedation and usually takes one to three hours. The surgeon makes discreet incisions, often under the chin or in the natural creases behind the ears, then lifts and tightens the platysma muscle and removes excess skin. Incisions are closed with sutures that are typically removed within one to two weeks.
Recovery and Aftercare
Most people experience swelling, bruising, and mild discomfort for the first week or two. You will need to wear a compression garment to support the neck during healing. Strenuous activity and heavy lifting should be avoided for two to three weeks; most people can return to normal daily activities within this timeframe, though full results take several months as swelling subsides.
Results and Longevity
A neck lift reduces the appearance of neck bands, tightens loose skin, and creates better definition along the jawline and neck. Results are typically visible within a few weeks but continue to improve as swelling decreases over three to six months. The results are long-lasting, though the aging process continues over time.
