Alarplasty is a surgical procedure that reshapes the ala, the fleshy outer side of the nose. The surgeon removes or repositions tissue to narrow the nostrils or refine the nostril shape. It is often combined with other nose procedures or performed alone to address width or flare of the nostrils.

Candidates are individuals bothered by the width or flare of their nostrils or the overall width of the nasal base. Good candidates have realistic expectations, are in good overall health, and have completed facial growth. A surgeon will evaluate whether alarplasty alone or combined with other nasal procedures will achieve the desired result.

Alarplasty is typically performed under local or general anesthesia in a surgical setting. The surgeon makes small incisions at the base of the nostril or inside the nose, then removes or repositions alar tissue. The procedure usually takes 30 to 60 minutes depending on complexity and whether additional nasal work is planned.

Initial swelling and bruising peak in the first few days and gradually subside over 2 to 3 weeks. Most people can return to light activities within a week. Full healing and final results may take several months as swelling continues to resolve.

Changes in nostril width and shape become visible as swelling subsides. Results are permanent since tissue has been surgically removed or repositioned. However, natural aging and changes in facial structure over time may subtly affect appearance.
